Shadow's Gate

Shadow's Gate Session 5
The After math of Blasphemy

introduction: I finally decided to start up the Mission logs for my new campaign titled “Shadow’s Gate”. it’s a second edition D&D game with elements of First edition thrown in as well as stuff from internet homebrews and the Player’s Option books. The players and characters have no idea about who is writing these reports at this time. Apparently someone is following the group.

Mission Report 1
By Gordoga of the Hidden Voice, of the Yellow
Date: Spring 8, 296 CY
Mission Objectives:
Observe the expedition sent to explore the Caverns of Shadow’s Deep.
Locate anything of Historical significance either pertaining to the Goblinoids or to Shadow’s Gate.
Remain out of sight unless absolutely necessary.
Report directly to Mayor Cedric or His advisor.
Mission Roster:
Soveliss (A Half-Elvin ranger, team leader)
Tursomog the Ripper (Hobgoblin Priest of Maglubiyet)
Degorous Fif (Grey-Elf Trap Specialist)
Rodomus (Human Ranger)
Grongk (Goblin Spear-man)
Mission Support:
Adept Hans (Justicar of Tyr, who had oddly enough chose to support this team as opposed to leading it.)
Squad Leader Franz (Paladin of Tyr, and Brother to Hans,)

Mission report:
After your meeting with Tursomog I had managed to follow him undetected as he escorted Storm Longfellow to the goblin quarter below Shadow’s Gate. He had finally arrived at the cave complex of his religious leaders and tells the story of how the half-Elvin rogue was punished by his deity for blasphemy. That instead of smiting Storm out right, the Lord of depths and Darkness instead chose to polymorph the rogue into a goblin. This created no small amount of controversy among the Hobgoblin Priests and shamans who wondered aloud (more than once) as to why the Mighty One (Their title), would spare the life of someone who they believed had no soul.
Storm had then explained that he had pleaded with the Lord of Depths and darkness to spare his life, in exchange for eternal servitude to not only Tursomog, but to Maglubiyet as well. Stunned by this, the religious leaders ordered Tursomog to leave Storm behind for further questioning and possible study. Tursomog reluctantly complied and went to find the rest of the party. Tursomog then found Degorous Fif, Grongk, Rodomus at the local tavern (called the Gates) and then met up with Soveliss later on.
The party then made their way back out of Shadows gate, passing some of the farms when they had spotted three Humans hiding in the distance behind a lone scrub brush. Their actions soon revealed them to be Brigands lying in wait for a soon to be passing merchant in a cart laden with coins.
Degorous used quick thinking and alerted the driver of the impending ambush, who had stopped, only to draw out not only the three bandits the party noticed, but also three more behind a nearby boulder.
With bravery terribly uncharacteristic of his race, the Goblin spearman, Grongk, charged into battle, but unfortunately, his small legs did not allow him to cover the distance of the charge right away. Rodomus, However, compensated for this by charging, scooping up the diminutive spearman and hurling him towards the enemy, but also fell short about 10 feet (of the standard measurement) from the enemy. Soveliss then moved forward to the bush the first group of bandits sprang from using it for cover while Degorous also charged into battle with his sword. Tursomog, However, decided to fire arrows into the brigands from his position, muttering something about a being called “The Dee-eM”. (perhaps this is a companion deity to Maglubiyet?) The first three bandits were cut down with relative ease, but the second group continued their charge against the Merchant who joined in the battle, himself.
Two members of the second group, realizing their comerades were defeated, proceeded to attack Rodomus and Grongk. The third bandit fought against the Merchant who had missed wildly, and smacked his horse; spooking him. The Horse proceeded to charge forward and trampled on the bandit attacking the cart.
Using some quick thinking, Grongk quickly grabbed his rope, and hurled it, circling the beast’s neck, allowing Rodomus to pull himself onto the horse’s back in an effort to calm the frightened animal. Degorous also joined the fray, by nimbly leaping onto the cart in an effort to grab the reins. However, Tursomog had stepped forward and invoked the power of his god calming the animal. Once the creature had stopped charging, the remaining bandits attempted to flee seeing that they were clearly out matched. However Rodomus, Soveliss and Degorous picked them off, clearing the battlefield.
Having had a moment to catch their breath, the Merchant explained that he was in the process of returning from the Dwarven City of Duw when the bandits were preparing their ambush. Grateful to the party for their assistance, he bought the brigands gear and then headed back to Shadow’s gate.
After disposing of the bodies, the party then continued on their way and finally entered the Goblin Blight Marsh. After a couple of hours, they then stumbled upon a group of nearly a dozen Orcs marching towards Shadow’s Deep, the Battle joined in earnest once again as all sides entering into battle took heavy damage. The Orcs were finally dispatched,, Tursomog had then found a barely surviving member and immediately sacrificed the Orc to his god by severing his head.
The party rested with the priests calling upon their gods for healing. A small debate broke out between Tursomog and Adept Hans as to which deity had the greater power. While it was somewhat entertaining, both parties decided to save the debate for another time, for the sake of the mission.
Eventually they neared the entrance to Shadow’s deep when they had then stumbled upon a group of Norkers, a mutated race of goblinoids, who tended to be more savage and bestial than most goblinoids. The small savage creatures charged into battle with the group. However, Degorous, tired of the day’s constant stream of battles, lit up a flask of oil and threatened to ignite the swamp gas, which is so prevalent in the Goblin-Blight. The Norkers reluctantly broke from the battle and slipped into the dark foliage while the party made their way to the gates of Shadow’s deep to once again delve into it’s caverns.

Events:
Following the departure of the expeditionary squad, Mykel returned from his wine-tasting expedition, and was instructed to report to mayor Cedric’s office. Once he arrived, he was given the objectives to his mission and introduced to Troop Leader: Arunga the Vigilant a decorated hobgoblin female officer, re-knowned for her mastery of the Drusus. Mykel was, at first, disturbed by the prospect of working along side another hobgoblin. (He had originally worked along side Acolyte Tursomog the Ripper). however, the call of duty overrode his protests. Arunga shook off the prejudice of her new subordinate apparently with a great deal of practice.
after being dismissed by the Mayor, Mykel was then introduced to the rest of the troop, which included:
6 Hobgoblin Archers
2 Human Shield-Men
1 Mage
1 Justicar of Tyr
Arunga later explained that She had become troop leader a rather long time ago, and that these were her most trusted troop members. Mykel shrugged and the party began the mission marching quickly towards the Goblin-Blight marsh. Not long before they reach the swamp they surprise a troop (by our measurement or 10 soldiers) of orcs getting ready to enter the marsh. Mykel and Arunga devised a quick battle plan, where he would use his aura of protection to enhance the shield wall set up to protect the archers. The squad moved to enact this plan as the Orcs began to charge into battle. The oncoming orcs were greeted by a series of arrows and magic missiles which injured the foul humanoids as the Arunga, Mykel and the Shield men attacked the orcs dispatching many of them rather quickly.
Three of the Orcs turned and fled with the speed born of great cowardice, however, Mykel was reluctant to allow the green-skins to alert their fellows; and proceeded to dispatch them with Arunga’s and the rest of the squad’s assistance.
However, a second troop arrived and attacked in earnest as the party was getting healed from the last battle. The battle was engaged in earnest. Arunga was so incensed by the orcs, She swung with a little too much might and her enchanted Drusus slipped from her hand due to all the blood and gore on the handle. Mykel and the other troop members covered her back as she went to retrieve her sword just in time to Cleave an orc’s head off. Mykel, however showed an extreme lax of discipline when he momentarily distracted himself with a glance at Arunga’s backside, and an Inappropriate comment under his breath. Arunga’s Keen ears heard the comment and replied with a bit of Mirth along the line of “Not even if you had an Ogre’s member, Pink-skin.” This seemed to relax the paladin, but at the same time remind him of his duty.
However they did not have long to recover and heal when a third troop charged at the party. This battle however was filled with many Mishaps for the stalwart troop; which included the following:
One Archer, who’s helmet was removed by his errant bow-string.
that same archer then trips over his feet and knocks himself and a fellow troop member down.
A Shield Man trips over himself and he knocks down an archer as well.
Arunga was so angered and embarassed, She became a swirling goddess of death, killing several orcs with a series of furious slashes, at one point she was so pleased with her progress, she uttered the phrase: ArUNGa! expletive YEAH! (Dm’s note, This got the player a “line of the day” XP bonus.)
Mykel, however, had the presence of mind to subdue one remaining orc for questioning.

Once the Justicar bound the orc’s wounds with healing salve, Soldier Mykel then began a rather unorthodox method of interrogation for a paladin of Tyr, the god of Law and justice. Although the captive resisted at first, Mykel’s aggressive methods soon loosened his tongue and caused him to reveal the following information.

1) His name is Kho-Morg, a foot soldier. 2) He and his comrades were part of a larger regiment sent to take the abandoned ruin of the third Hexen-Kaiser’s fortress from the goblinoids. 3)This larger regiment is commanded by a mighty Orog warrior named Kho-Rog, whom Kho-Morg described as a “Umie-Slayur” (perhaps a specialized kind of ranger?) who is also supported by the priests of Gruumsh, the one-eyed deity of the orc race, and a long standing enemy of Maglubiyet. 4) the Current regiment consists of 20 tribal leaders (company leaders by our measurement each one leading 100 men.) However, I doubt the orc population could have achieved those numbers so quickly since the last Orc purge. This may be exaggeration on Kho-Morg’s part. 5) The mission however consists of wiping out the goblinoids there including the Bug-bears and Norkers and some renegade Goblin and hobgoblin tribes. This mortified Arunga who expressed a hope of at least persuading the more lawfully aligned goblinoids to join the forces at Shadow’s gate. After some discussion, Mykel and Arunga came to the conclusion that the expeditionary force may no longer be safe at shadow’s deep, Mykel was instructed to take half the troop and escort the expedition force to safety while Arunga would take the remaining members and the orc back to Shadow’s Gate for instructions. Mykel quickly found the expedition and brought them back to town explaining his day’s events and the possibility that the expedition will have to wait until Kho-Rog is dealt with.

Welcome to your Adventure Log!
A blog for your campaign

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.

Shadow's Gate Session 7a
The party returns after a gruelling trip only tofind that Shadow's gate has now been taken over!
“Stirrings of the Reich”

Shadow’s Gate Session 7a notes
Written by Goronga of the Hidden Voice
Date: Spring 9 296CY

When the party returned to the city of Shadow’s Gate, we noticed that the gates were now being staffed by more guards that were normally used, Arunga the Vigilant remarked to Soveliss that these were not the normal soldiers from the city but from the very Northern Reich itself! After formally introducing herself to the guards and their superiors as Troop-Leader, we were then escorted to the outer courts of the Mayor’s offices.
Mayor Cedric met us dressed in his full dress uniform for the very first time. He was rather concerned that we would have returned from shadow’s deep so quickly after being sent off. However Arunga reported that her troops had been engaged by several Orc squads in the space of the hour long trip, and she no longer felt that the mission could be conducted safely. While Cedric commended the Hobgoblin on her concern for the expeditionary squad, He informed her and the group that he had been well aware of the Orcish incursions into the Goblin Blight and the lands surrounding the City. And the reason he had sent the expeditionary unit was to obtain what ever the Orcs were looking for within the ruined fortress of the Third Hexe-Kaiser. He had hoped that the Squad would have remained on their mission until it was completed, due to the fact he had very important visitors from the Reich.
It was at that moment, the door to Mayor Cedric’s office opened, as TWO mages, brandishing the rank of Seniors stepped out holding it open as a tall figure stepped out.
Mayor Cedric immediately bowed low as a middle aged human bearing the Red trimmed robes of a Dean stepped forward and inspected the crew before him. Arunga immediately signaled her squads to bow low as the Mage was introduced as Dean Heinrich Krauss, a long time veteran of the Sun-Fire War. His face still bore the scars of burns and claw marks as he surveyed those gathered before him.
Mayor Cedric offered apologies for keeping him waiting, The Dean, displayed a keen interest in hearing about the expedition to Shadow’s Deep so far, and demanded to know who the squad leader is. Soveliss stepped forward, and began to report on the progress of having mapped out the almost all of the first floor. However, he also mentioned about the grafitti he had read stating:
“Come to the Mother’s temple on Sixth.”
Upon hearing that He chided Mayor Cedric for not reporting this sooner, that perhaps that it was the work of the now missing Lady Ambrose of the Cult of Illmatar; A popular goddess, who is believed to have great favor even from the Dark Gods, for her kindness.
She was reported to have been heading to the new capital of the Northern Reich, called “River Fort” in the common. Dean Krauss then corrected Soveliss, informing him that the figure known as “Shadow” should be referred to as “The Third Hexe-Kaiser”.
The Dean then proceeded to inform Arunga the Vigilant that, in light of recent developments, she was immediately to be promoted to the rank of Company leader (Having authority over 130 personnel) along with the head of the City’s Calvary, Rhett Twyfel-bane. The Dean then informed the Mayor that since the Reich cannot afford to lose Shadow’s gate to the current Orc uprising, He would now over-see the operations of the city until such a time as the Orcs no longer posed a threat. Sovelliss and the rest of the party were immediately dismissed by the Dean and instructed to leave as soon as possible to the Ruins of Third Hexe-Kaiser’s fortress, after they have all spoken to their immediate supervisors.

Report Details:

After leaving the Presence of Dean Kraus, A Soldier met both Soveliss and Tursomog instructing them to go to the office of Merryn Faeriedell. the Village Forrester. The Grey Elven Troop leader of the rangers, finally called them to enter and introduced to three new members:

Sarita: A female human rogue working for the constable; “Red” Reginald, who specializes in trap removal.

Volsted: a Male Human soldier who worked as a Combat Tutor for Monster-Trainers.

Gerard Chigrynsky: a Male Human Mercenary, who has been used ocassionally by Merryn Faeriedell.

Just as Merryn was about to list the objective of the Mission, two (technically three) more party members arrived late:

Apprentice-Warden Cyrro: Grey Elven Wizard specialist in transmutation magic.

Weycalin: a Half Elven Monster trainer and his newly captured gargoyle apprentice, Grzah.

Once the Introductions have been made, both Soveliss and Tursomog began to explain the creatures and rooms found so far, including the mishaps of the previous team rogue, Storm Long-fellow. The party then left to continue their mission. However, once they neared the Goblin-Blight marsh, they encountered an old man alone, who seemed to pay some attention to Weycalin. After introducing himself as “Cooter”, he then began to tell Weycalin of his own pet monster, a green dragon that had left him. He speculated that the dragoness had gone to lay her eggs and tend to her hatchlings. However, having not heard from his pet, he expressed that she may not have survived, and that he now seeks her progeny. He then asks the party that if they find such hatchlings that at least one be returned to him to raise. Reluctantly the party agreed. Just then his other pet emerged from the bushes, a feline beast known as a caterwaul, which immediately returned to Cooter to protect him.

Cooter, then challenged Weycalin to a friendly match to test his caterwaul against the half-elf’s gargoyle. Weycalin agreed and they moved to a clearing to have their match. Tursomog then graciously offered to judge the match, which would be a best out of five strikes match.

They stood thirty feet apart, and at the commencement of the match, Cooter’s caterwaul charged into battle, leaping at Grzah and swiping with it’s razor sharp claw. the creatures speed was beyond belief as it seemed to become a blur. However, it’s attacks proved ineffective against the Gargoyle’s rock hard skin. The gargoyle then erupted into a flurry of activity missing with her claws and bite attacks, one of which hit home. The caterwaul erupted into a flurry of attacks, also striking at the Gargoyle twice…

Grzah then visciously struck slamming and biting the caterwaul earning three strikes, at which time, Cooter surrendered the match, and congratulated Weycalin, informing him of the tournament to take place in the Reich Capital of Hochburg des Thafe, at the Spring/Summer Equinox.

After bidding the old trainer fare-well, the resumed the mission, finally arriving at the Shadow’s Deep Complex, being met by Arunga the Vigilant and her main squad, She informs Soveliss that she had set up the supply line, and that her squad will remain at the entrance to establish a base camp and guard their supplies. She, however, informs the party that She must return to town to complete her duties. Soveliss thanked her for her time and the party then made it’s way down the steps into the complex.

They then made their way through various corridors in an attempt to complete their map, finally coming to a large chamber, which appeared to be a large communal bath that the goblinoids used during their occupation. there were alternating columns depicting the Deities Bagrivviyek (The Goblinoid deity of “Peace” among the tribes) and Djurgah (the Goblinoid goddess of the swamps). before leaving the corridor to enter the bath, Sarita’s keen hearing alerted her to the sound of footsteps in the shallow water. Waiting in the corridor, The party then spotted a lone norker scout and seven others about 30 feet behind. the Scout then spotted the party and screamed to his comrades. The battle began in earnest, as the party struggled valiantly against the savage goblinoids. It eventually turned into a comedy of errors as both parties made blunders which could have proved fatal. However the party rallied, eventually cutting down the tough humanoids save one.

Serina then proceeded to interrogate the Norker, learning the following:

1) there are several more norkers down below as well as several kobold made traps.

2) Some of the creatures down below are much tougher

3) he had seen Someone resembling the description of lady Ambrose, mentioning not only her own goddess, Ilmatar, but also a Goblinoid deity named Kika-Nuti.

At the mention of Kika nuti, Tursomog reacted with great beligerance, demanding the Norker be silent. However, Volsted persuaded the grim cleric to reveal the information, since it might have an affect on the mission. Reluctantly, Tursomog explained that Kika Nuti was a Goblinoid deity who is actually BENEVOLENT! She, according to Tursomog, teaches that the goblinoid people should ot only be free of the Lord of depths and darkness, but they could actually learn to be GOOD! Such a thing appeared to be quite blasphemous even to a reformist like the acolyte.

Once no further information could be attained the party then took the norker upstairs, to be held by the soldiers for further questioning. the party then resumed exploring the first level of the complex finally discovering a large sleeping chamber filled with 8 goblins! Completely surprising the humanoids, the party demanded their surrender, the goblins then explained that they were soldiers of the reich itself! They then told of how they were left behind during the battle of the axe and believed themselves deserted by their commander named Aeriti the Vigilant, Arunga’s predecessor Cyrro then proceeded to inform the goblins that their commander was assassinated by the bugbears, but the reich goblinoids managed to push the Bugbears from the Goblin-Blight. The Goblins were both pleased and saddened by the news, and the party then escorted the goblins to the base camp to assist in security and to rest safely while they continued to explore the complex.

Once that was done the party then made their way to the first stair case they had found, and discovered that the gate which had kept the stairs closed was left as a massively twisted and broken piece of metal. careful examination revealed that foot prints were there. First of a large humanoid figure, then two other footprints of smaller humanoid figured which followed a few moments later. When initially discovered the gate was locked shut, Although concerned as to what kind of creature would tear the gates open in that fashion, they proceeded down-ward into the depths…

Report:
The party had finally made their way to the stair well to the second floor, when Tursomog the ripper suggested that given the hard travel and the last few combats; it would be wise to get some rest, that while the large figure that bent the gates to the stair well may advance ahead of the party, there is a good chance that He may rest to heal and recover his energy. once again the expedition squad considered the wisdom of his words, and returned upstairs to the base camp the soldiers and new found goblin allies. The next morning, after everyone rested during an uneventful night, Weycailin seemed much more robust and healthy, as did Sarita.

Once ready to go, the party once again descended into the dark depths of Shadow’s gate, debating as to which set of stairs to take to go down further. One member suggested the southern most stair case, and the party followed, only to realise that it would take them far deeper into the complex than they realised. That perhaps the stairs travelled past a floor that required exploration. They then decided to go back up to the first level of Shadow’s Deep and they made their way to the northenmost stair well, which took them to the second floor, which was marked in Goblin-Scrawl as “Sekund Flor”

They decided to enter into the nearest room to the stairwell to find a large chamber with piles of shiny coins and gems. They also spotted a pair of Gigantic Worker ants, arrainging the loot into piles for some odd reason. Seeing the ants were distracted with their task, the party charged in and made quick work of the monstrous vermin; proving to them the strength and might of the Reich. Once victorious, they discovered that the ants appeared to have been collecting the shiny bits of gold and electrum that may have littered the complex.

The party continued exploration, until they came across a large room with red and white floor tiles, similar to the boards use to play the ancient game of “chess”. Sarita checked the first ten feet and seemed confident that there was no traps to be found. only to have to eat her words when she is slammed hard by an arrow from the far side of the room. After much exploration and debate, it was determined, that the Kobolds designed this room to use alternating floor plates to activate the arrow traps. The plates would switch at varous intervals and appeared to have been designed to distract unwary intruders while alerting the guards

Deciding to leave the room be for now, they then continued to explore the rest of the floor, Moments later, the party entered a large room, which, was declared to gave heen used as a sort of training area for goblin Spear Men. However, it was over two dozen norkers that inhabited the room. Once again the party charged forward into combat, tearing through the savage brutes with bravery and sharp steel.
However, two of the Norkers managed to get several solid hits on Grzah, which were deflected by her rock hard skin. Enraged, the Gargoyle rampaged, slaughtering the offending goblinoids, The party then realised that there seemed to be a leader giving the norkers orders while cowardly hidding behind the warriors. Cyrro and Soveliss, Unleashed a flurry of arrows finally killing the Norker chieftain. it was only a matter of time before the party cut down all but two of the creatures. One of which w captured by Grzah taking advantage of a grease spell cast by Cyrro, the other clearly surrendered after seeing how out numered he was, decided to surrender himself to the mercies of the expedition.
The Norkers then told the party of some of the creatures still on this floor, which included giant spiders and a swarm bats.
The most chillign information, however, was his description of the large humanoid that entered. The norker told the party of large humanoid male, with red skin and eyes as well as his horns. Cyrro then announced the creature described fits with the description of a Demon-Human hybrid refered to as a “Cambion”. These Foul beings have made much trouble for the Reich, in the past, as humans had been seduced by creatures from the lower plains or were forcibly raped and impregnated, depending on the demon’s whim. It is these beings which inevitably served as the breeding stock and parentage of The Teiflings of legend.
It was at this point that the party decided to locate the Giant spiders on this floor and attack them. With the Norker’s help, the party happened upon the spiders and at once began the attack.
Perhaps filled with enthusiasm, Weycalin decided to use his taming ability on a giant spider, only to be soundly rebuffed, and then later berated by grzah for having not weakend the creature first with combat. Fortunately the Giant spiders were no match for the Squad and the room was taken with much fierce bloodshed. the party then discovered that teh room had been littered with copper coin, and a webbing encased item suspended tantalizingly above the head. Weycailin thn instructed his Gargoyle to pull the Item out of the webbing and she reluctantly cooperated, almost getting herself ensnared.
Once down from her task,Grzah handed the blade to Weycailin which was then handed to Cyrro for Cleaning by Magic. With the Webbing removed, the sword was discovered to be of Master-work quality, however it was not enchanted.

to be continued.

Soveliss (Half elven Ranger-Team Leader)
Tursomog the Ripper (Hobgoblin Cleric of Maglubiyet)
Apprentice Cyrro of the Yellow (Elven Wizard)
Weycalin (Half elven Monster trainer and his Gargoyle “Apprentice” Grzah)
Gerard (Human Mercenary-Warblade)
Sarita (Human Trap Specialist)
Volsted (Human Mercenary)

Primary Objectives: Explore the ruins of Shadow’s Deep to determine what the orcs are seeking within the Goblin-Blight.

Secondary Mission Objectives:

-locate any artifacts or knowledge which may prove useful in determining the fate of Hexe-Kaiser Shadow -Determine the number of Goblinoids who may be sympathetic to the Reich and wish to rejoin. -Map the complex to see if new tunnels were created. -Locate, if possible, the Lady Ambrose, Priestess of Ilmatar. -Deal With any Of the barbaric goblinoids such as Bug Bears and Norkers as well as any other monsters that have taken residence within Shadow’s Deep.

Report: Once the party had cleaned out the room containing the Giant Spiders, Tursomog suggested that the party rest to recover their spells and recieve the necessary healing for the wounds they sustained. Tursomog then cast the spell called “animal messenger” using one of the local bats to alert the guards upstairs.
After a few moments, the bat returned with a message that Sarita and Volsted were to return to the surface, once they did the party rested for the evening and woke up the next day. After mappng out more of the second floor The party discovered a room with a pedestal carved with runes upon which a large clay pot rested. Cyrro then determined that the runes glowed with moderate strength Transmutation magic and within the pot was n object also containing faint Transmutation magic as well. He attempted to decipher the runes when he realized that they were trapped to activate once the pell was completely read! He quickly ceased reading the runes before they set off what-ever spell it contained. Gerard then offered to cross the runes counting on his great fortitude to over come the spell. Tursomog, however, enhanced the mercenary’s Constitution with an endurance spell, allowing Gerard to safely cross the runes which glowed brilliantly. Cyrro then mentioned that they were enchanted with blindness, and should Gerard have succumbed he would have been permanently blinded. Using his great strength the Mercenary then lifted the large pot and brought it over. although reluctant to do so, he hefted out an ornately wrought longsword.

Once the final chambers of the second floor were mapped, the party found two stair wells which would have descended to the Fourth floor, completely bypassing the third. Wisely, they decided to bring up the treasure of the second floor to the guards at the base camp and proceeded to the first where they found a set of stairs which would have taken them to the third, which was located at the public baths. The stairs eventually took them to a large rotunda painted with the life of the Hexe-Kaiser Shadow starting from when he was working as a mercenary up until his coronation. Tursomog, Cyrro and Gerard then proceeded to speak of the history of the third Hexe-kaiser, remarking about the fact that while shadow was not highly educated, He demonstrated a great deal of cunning, which seems to be typical of a Sorcerer! The pictures then detailed that not many within the Academy were pleased when Shadow had taken the office of Hexe-Kaiser, and that indeed Historical records have indicated that his Being a Sorcerer was a major point of contention! The party marhed onward, untill they came to a large trapezoidal chamber containing something of an atrium! WIthin it’s walls a Badly wounded Dwarven Warrior and a Halfling wizard greeted them suspiciously at first, especially at the sight of Tursomog. Upon seeing that the party contained mostly members of the reich, they introduced themselves as Bragni Storm-Shield and apprentice Colwin Brandybuck of the Yellow. (Apprentice Cyrro was a bit indignant at the Halfling seeing him as some kind of rival.) Bragni and Sovellis then begain to compare notes. Bragni and Colwin had a third companion whom they believed to be a teifling Ranger known only as “Elite”. Upon reaching Shadow’s Deep, however, he turned on His comerades, demonstrating greater power than a Teifling should normally have. Sovellis then informed Bragni that the norkers told the party that Elite was not a mere teifling but a half-blooded Cambion! Bragni af first dismissed such a notion, remarking that Norkers were not trust worthy, nor were they very intelligent. However, Sovellis wisely told Bragni that He should head upstairs to the base camp to recieve healing (Actually, He at first offered to have Tursomog heal his wounds, but Bragni refued to let the Hobgoblin touch him, given their ancient rivalry. It should be noted however, that actually Hobgoblins and elves are lost standing racial enemies, and Tursomog consents to working with Cyrro, but that was not my place to suggest.) Bragni and Colwin finally made their way upstairs, while the party moved forward, Eventually finding yet another Rotunda, they entered carefully when they noticed three odd Stalactites. However as the party discussed what to do next, all three of the stalactites, Opened their eyes and swooped down revealling themselves to be Dark Mantles, a dreaded Predator of the Under-dark! Sovelliss moved quickly, Firing off an arrow which gravely injured one immediately, Cyrro then cast Enlarge on Gerard who then charged into battle striking the injured creature and missed a second. Grzah was thn ordered by Weycalin to charge and bury it’s horns into the second, leaving a third to attack at a later time. This proved to be difficult as the creature shot a cloud of magical ink which covered the area in darkness. Gerard, however refused to be daunted as he used his hearing to locate the creature and cut it down almost immediately. After a careful search of the rotunda they located several electrum coins a potion and a skeleton key!

Once again the party emerged victorious when they heard the faint sound of a Child Crying…Following the sound, they opened a door, and discovered a wyrmling who was shocked at their presence. Sovellis then remembered His proise to the Monster trainer, “Old Cooter” and informed the Wyrmling that they would take him to someone who knew his mother. The Green Dragon Child was incredulous at first, suspicious after having been hounded by Norkers for much of his (Her?) young life. the child offered part of it’s horde to gather some safety, but has yet to decide if he would trust the party or not.

Secondary Mission Objectives:
-locate any artifacts or knowledge which may prove useful in determining the fate of Hexe-Kaiser Shadow

-Determine the number of Goblinoids who may be sympathetic to the Reich and wish to rejoin.

Report: While the party continued their negotiations with the young Dragon, the party agreed that the child should remain in his hiding place for now, until it could be safely transported out of the complex. Soveliss, however, had agreed to take a Mighty Composite longbow which proved to be equal to his strength. He then discovered an ancient map located within the dragon Child’s horde, which appeared to contain a detailed drawing of the Broken lands before the warp had occurred. The words “New York City transit” could clearly be seen. Such a great find could be of enormous value to the academy!
The party continued onward searching the remaining apart of the hall when a sparrow finally found it’s way to the party, It relayed that the party should return to the surface as quickly as possible. After making their way upwards, the Supply brigade introduced a new member to assist them, a Human by the name of Artemis Eburi.By his uniform it was clear that he was sent by the constable “Red” Reginald to assist us, in the hopes of currying favor with Dean Krauss. Artemis Displayed a great deal of tact, indicating that he would serve as both our scout and possible diplomat. Once introductions were made, the expeditionary force returned once again to the depths of Shadow’s deep, and they once again began to explore.
At one point in the Mission the squad found their way to a thick wooden door that appeared to be stuck. Many attempts were made. However, Artemis made a slight blunder, when he instructed Grzah to help Gerard break down the door. At first she balked at the idea, not wanting to blemish her stone-like skin. After some insistence from Weycailin, She then assisted by grabbing Gerard by the arm, and swung him head first into the door. The gargoyle, was astonished that the door held firm. Finally Tursomog stepped forward, and with several swings of his sacred Battle axe, he splintered the trouble some device, only to reveal a large room full of bones. As Artemis stepped forward to investigate, eager to prove himself useful, he was immediately shocked to find the bones stirring to form a squad of Skeletons. At first, the party scrambled to find a way to dispatch the undead when Tursomog stepped forward and began rebuking the Undead to obedience, however, so great was the Cleric’s faith in Maglubiyet; the Lord of depths and darkness destroyed the fell beings with his Infernal might! Tursomog was so moved by the display, He began to preach at length about the power of his god, much to the chagrin of the more good-aligned members of the party. Cyrro did joke that perhaps Artemis could serve as an appropriate sacrifice, prompting the constable to display some disdain towards the idea. Tursomog then eased Artemis by stating that he is only permitted to sacrifice prisoners of war or enemies of the Reich felled in battle.

The party continued on their way, searching through the various halls until finally they found yet another party of Norkers, led by a rather large Bugbear! Almost immediately, Tursomog charged into battle, incensed with rage at the sight of the large Goblinoid and swung with his axe! It struck the Bugbear, who returned with a crushing swipe from his Morning-star, that missed the head of the Hobgoblin priest; but barely. Weycailin thought quickly trapping a majority of the norkers with his tangle foot bag, while the party fought against he bugbear and the remaining norkers. Soveliss, Tursomog and Artemis worked quickly to dispatch the Bugbear with arrows and blades until he perished, revealing the awesome Might of the Reich to these barbaric goblinoids! I was almost tempted to shout in triumph seeing such a sight! Once seeing their leader dispatched, the remaining norkers begged for mercy from the squad. Artemis then began questioning the Norkers, demanding answers regarding the Lady Ambrose. The Norkers indicated that the lady Ambrose, (Whom he had the nerve to refer to as the “crazy woman” had gone down below, where the “Dead things” were. Further questioning revealed that the lower levels of Shadow’s gate had become populated by Skeletons and Ghouls! He also mentioned the “Demon Man” had also passed by this floor, however, he was left alone since he appeared to be quite powerful.
The party then allowed the Norkers to remain alive after absconding with the Bugbear’s weapons and armor, along with several platinum Coins that were found that appeared to be from the Fire nation. Cyrro and Tursomog then began to explain that the fire Newts had occupied this area for a very long time, and that it was not uncommon for them to rob from the fire Nation during their crusades. The party then began investigating further, discovering an empty chamber save for playing card strewn about, and a metal hook suspended by a thick metal chain. Artemis, and Cyrro looked about when the Constable found a small panel in a wall. attempting to open the hidden panel, Artemis’s Keen reflexes spared him of a cruel fate from a spiked pit, He later found yet another pit trap which he dismantled.

Questions after great victories for the reich!

Gerard (Human Mercenary-War blade)
Constable Artemis Eburi (Human Rogue)
Brother Ishmael (Halfling Monk)
Primary Objectives: Explore the ruins of Shadow’s Deep to determine what the orcs are seeking within the Goblin-Blight.

Secondary Mission Objectives:

-Determine the number of Goblinoids who may be sympathetic to the Reich and wish to rejoin.

Report: After Artemis has successfully dealt with the traps, another sparrow made it’s way to the party and lit on Tursomog’s shoulder. The dour cleric then repeated that the supply party had returned with yet another member for the expedition. The group then returned with diligence.
Upon returning to the surface, The supply troop introduced the new member, a Halfling monk named Ismael, who was sent by the Saffron monks. Soveliss then suggested the party rest for the evening to regain spells and heal their wounds.
The next morning, the party once again descended to the third floor of the complex and proceeded to finish exploring, eventually they discovered two giant worker ants, foraging for supplies, the party set on the vermin at once, quickly killing the creatures within moments. The party later encountered a Giant scorpion which was also dispatched.
The party then made their way into a large room covered with runes, Upon closer verification the writing seemed to be part of a binding spell, but before they could continue to study the strange writing, an Shape shimmered into existence, revealing a creature known as an Ethereal Marauder. Artemis Quickly sprang into action, tumbling into position and stabbed the creature beneath it’s rib-cage, right into it’s heart. Gerard seemed to demonstrate a rather ghoulish interest in the creature’s parts, however Tursomog, Weycailin and Soveliss, persuaded the Mercenary to leave the creature whole so that it could be sent to the academy for study.
Later, the Party located yet another Sacred Structure, a Massive Octagonal room which appeared to be a sacrificial chamber. The Observant members of the party caught sight of a pair of aberrations known as “Chokers” Fleeing for safety on the ceiling, using their clawed hands to hold them. Soveliss, Cyrro and Gerard Unleashed a salvo of arrows while Grzah flew into a charge to the second. The creatures were taken down and fell to 30’ to the floor with sickening thuds. again Gerard was going to collect gruesome trophies of the creatures, when The party once again had to persuade the War-Blade to leave the creatures relatively whole for study by the Academy. it was at that point that Tursomog and Cyrro took turns explaining the function of the chamber, where Goblinoids used to gather for ceremonies where they would practice the sacrifice of sentient beings to the Lord of Depths and darkness. The Victim was brought to the large table in the center of the chamber, and beheaded after several chants by the congregation. Tursomog later explained that the Soul of the victim would then be sent to the Realm of Clangor to serve as slaves to the Goblinoids who have fallen honorably in battle. He then proceeded to expound further, stating that before Shadow’s involvement, that the goblinoids did practice cannibalism, but were eventually educated against this practice.
With the lesson ended, the party continued finding yet another large round chamber, containing a monstrous scorpion. It seems that the former base of the Hexe Kaiser had fallen into being infested with these creatures, but the party functioned like a well oiled machine, defeating the poisonous arachnid with relative ease, demonstrating the strength of the Reich! at once, Artemis began his custom of exploration when he found several runes surrounding a small safe. Cyrro determined that the spell in question was designed to go off when the attempt was made to open the safe. Artemis proceeded to attempt to dismantle the trap only to accidentally set it off. Fortunately his quick reflexes allowed him to jump back before he was blasted by a flash of freezing cold. Once the trap was set off, he opened the safe finding several gold coins.
Which leads me to question as to why so much coins and treasure was left by the goblinoids, when they fled the complex, and how they were able to procure so much during their time here? Another question which entered my mind is regarding the Dragon and the Monster trainer “Cooter”. To my knowledge, Monster trainers had only managed to tame creatures like Pseudo-dragons, Fire Drakes and the like, but none have been known to have tame a full fledged dragon. Another question I have is why would a green dragon, traditionally a forest dwelling creature, would lay her eggs within a swamp like the Goblin Blight? Another question to be answered, is, If Cooter tamed a dragon, why would she then leave him to hatch her eggs? Perhaps these questions will be answered as time unfolds.

Gerard (Human Mercenary-War blade)
Deputy Constable Artemis Eburi (Human Rogue)
Brother Ishmael (Halfling Monk)
Primary Objectives: Explore the ruins of Shadow’s Deep to determine what the orcs are seeking within the Goblin-Blight.

Secondary Mission Objectives:

Report: Once the Chokers were done away with, The party continued exploring the complex, mapping and dismantling traps as they came along. Finally, they entered into a somewhat large chamber Illuminated by the light of a child which appeared to be in flames. Cyrro later determined through his knowledge, that the "child’ was an elemental creature called a magmin. When first greeted the creature responded in it’s own alien language. Artemis then asked the creature if it could understand common to raise it’s right hand. the creature did so indicating that he (she?) could understand common but apparently could not speak it. Cyrro and Tursomog then debated as to who would cast “Comprehend languages” Which requires the caster to touch the creature speaking in order to use. Cyrro then volunteered while Tursomog volunteered to heal the Wizard should he start to immolate.

Cyrro then spoke at length with the elemental ho informed him that he was originally summoned by Hexe-Kaiser Shadow to help assist in guarding the place. However, Shadow had disappeared before properly dismissing it. Apparently the creature continued fulfilling it’s duty using a near by kitchen to fuel itself and keep warm for over 50 years. He had later informed the party of various creatures that managed to escape it, including two squads of Orcs as well as the Cambion that was previously mentioned. The party debated about possibly attacking the creature to knock it unconscious and thus sending it back to it’s plane, however wisdom prevailed and Cyrro suggested leaving the creature be until they could either find Hexe-Kaiser Shadow, or an upper ranked member of the Arcane Academy. The creature then handed the party a Divine Magic Scroll with the spells “Summon nature’s ally” and “Summon Outsider” which were left by the orcs as they fled, along with some of their coins.
Biding the creature farewell, they continued on mapping the remainder of the fourth level easily killing a dark mantle before descending to the fifth floor.

Level 5:
Entering the fifth level the party encountered a group of Four Skeletons, Tursomog invoked the power of his god and quickly destroyed three of them, the party then worked quickly to destroy the third,
The party then encountered yet another rune covered octagonal chamber, Artemis then bravely entered to explore the room and was set upon by Three Ethereal Marauders! The party sprang into action and fought furiously eventually winning yet another great victory for the Reich! It was during this battle, Cyrro had used the spell alter-self to grant him the appearance and tough skin of a troglodyte.
Later they continued exploring the fifth level, eventually discovering a large chamber. Artemis once again entered first and sensed something was amiss, a feeling of hate and bloodlust which seemed to focus squarely on HIM. As the Party entered the room, Artemis turned to find a Long ans Short sword seeming to materialize out of the nearest wall. The two blades swung hard, biting deep into Atemis’ flesh covering the room in a red-mist. Once it had cleared, Artemis was laying at the feet of a demonic looking being wearing a Jade cloak and armor fashioned from the Fire nation. It was none other than the dreaded Cambion they had heard so much about. The party sprang into action when Tursomog leaned forward, calling upon the Lord of Depths and darkness to heal his human comerade. Once alert to do so, The Deputy Constable tumbled and scampered away from the Cambion’s hate fuled blades, while Cyrro released a burst of arcane fire, which had NO effect on the demonic Hybrid. Soveliss missed with his arrows just as the Cambion moved to exterminate his prey. Ishmael attempted to attack, only to miss, and he was brutally struck down for his trouble. Tursomog then charged into battle, his sacred axe, bristling with the dark smiting power of his god, and to his shock, swings wildly, missing. The party had taken many blows from the cambion until finally dropped down to unconsciousness with a concerted effort. It was a hard won victory for the expeditionary force. however they debated as to whether or not they should keep the beng alive long enough for questioning.
Reluctantly it was agreed and Tursomog healed the cambion enough to awaken the half fiend.
at first, the cambion spoke the tongue of the fire nation, which is extremely different thn the common the party was used to. Cyrro had once again used his arcane knowledge to cast comprehend languages.
What happened next greatly surprised me. It seems that the Cambion was curious to see a troglodyte dressed in the garb of an Academy wizard; given the race’s natural stupidty. Still the cambion proved to be quite amenable to conversation with Cyrro, but his hate filled gaze fixated itself to Artemis, who was quite glad that the manacles were strong in holding the Cambion fast.
The Creature proved to be full of somewhat useful information, He was originally from the Fire nation, and a member a group of warriors known in the common as the Demonseid Elite or Ji-ngyi-ng érzi de èmó. Raised at birth to embrace their demonic heritage and serve their Emperor. He was sent to investigate the tunnels of Shadow’s Deep. When asked about his hatred of Artemis, He revealled that he blamed the humans of the Reich for the fire nation’s initial defeat during the last fire crusade. Believing that the Reich will eventually attempt to invade the Fire nation, He studied as much as he could to learn how to destroy the “White-Devils”.
It is at this point, that I am confused, Comprehend languages, while a greatly utilitarian spell for translating ancient tomes; does not allow for two way communication. How is it then, that The Cambion could understand Cyrro? Even if He was a half blooded demon, he would not possess the telepathic skill to speak any known language like his demonic parent. This leaves me to wonder, that perhaps he is able to speak and understand Common? The party eventually negotiated his release and instructed him to assure his superiors that the Expedition squad intends to deal with any possible threats within Shadow’s Deep, and they then gave him two daggers and some clothes to cover himself before taking him above ground. Once there two of the base camp’s horsemen accompanied the creature two miles before determining that he was indead heading back to the Fire Nation.
